The Canal Zone Study Group (a non-profit organization and APS affiliate) is pleased to announce its 40th Mail Bid Sale. The sale is composed of 534 lots of exceptional quality Canal Zone stamps, postal history and ephemera. The sale, which closes on November 15th, may be viewed at the Study Group website, canalzonestudygroup.com or czsg.org, or the profusely illustrated catalogue may be obtained for $2.00 at the above listed address.The sale consists of 534 lots ranging in value from $10 to several thousands of dollars. Beginning with over 300 lots of various Canal Zone stamps and postal stationery highlighted by numerous rare and desirable errors and varieties. Included is a used 1904 1c green Double Overprint (Scott #9d, CV $2000) of which only 20 are known to exist. Also among the early map stamps is a scarce example of the key value 8c on 50c (#15, CV $2000) with PF certificate. There are many more scarce stamps and errors throughout the early Panama overprinted issues.
The United States overprinted issues are well represented and include a rare example of the 1925 10c orange with the ZONE/ZONE error (#87a, CV $3000) of which only 5 are known and the 20c ZONE/CANAL error in a large block (#92c, CV 4750+) with only 3 known examples. Also included are excellent representations of all back-of-book areas. Of special note are large sections of seldom seen Canal Zone perfins, precancels and revenues. The postal stationery section includes numerous scarce items including errors and varieties and rare postal cards including several X-mas cards.
The large postal history section begins with many 1st and 2nd issue covers and continues with every conceivable type of card or cover sent from or to the Canal Zone over its 75 years as a separate postal entity. Many items are seldom if ever offered to collectors. The sale concludes with 10 lots of important philatelic and historical literature and documents.
